Gus's Barbeque
South Pasadena, California

My sister tried to order a dirty martini with blue cheese....but no luck, so she created her own... First, order the classic martini...add the dirty part ....rub rim with real blue cheese chunks from your salad...accidently drop bacon in the drink from your salad, if you wish...finally, add a dash of pepper. Enjoy!

      • I completely agree! I wouldn't get near this drink, but my sister thought it was delicious. The pepper she added made it look like little bugs were floating in her martini glass full of blue cheese goo.

Recent write-up in Sunset Magazine has supposedly brought people from as far away as 2 hours away. Our waitress says, "People must really like Bar-B-Q"

The "new" Gus's is celebrating their one year anniversary April 13-16 with great drink prices and a no sales tax promotion.

    • But where the heck is South Pasadena? It's not like you can just lace up your tennies and there you are. I hear an awful lot about the place, though.

Not the usual big Saturday night crowd at Gus's. Folks must be out of town for spring break.

    • There's also a new appetizer available that you won't find on the menu. A tasty looking stack of nine ribs that the guy enjoying them next to us said were delicious.

The Gus's new ownership made it to the one year mark. It's certainly wildly popular (what recession?), but it just doesn't have the great feeling of the old Gus's.

They're pouring these embarrasing, barely 1/2 glasses of wine...makes me nastalgic for the old days with Bobby and Juan behind the bar.

Sorry to hear you had such a terrible experience. They really blew it, and they owe you an apology. (Although it doesn't sound like you'll be going back).

    • I certainly won't be going back anytime soon. If only there had been somebody there entertaining everybody by singing Mac The Knife then maybe we would have had reason to stay--food or no food.

      • Hey, come to think of it, I happen to know a guy in town who does a terrific "Mack the Knife" :)

i went there with some friends the other night. my girlfriend is a vegan and brought in outside food from Patakan (across the street) because they didn't have a single thing she could eat. after serving us drinks (my girlfriend with outside food had gotten an expensive glass of wine), which we ordered with outside food on the table, we said we were ready to order. we were LOUDLY and RUDELY given an ultimatum: (a) make my girlfriend close her box of outside food and starve or (b) we could all leave. was this a joke? why would they have served us drinks already? we left that waste of space before you could say "i don't want my drink anymore and i'm not paying for it." The manager confirmed the stupid policy This place is lame. Don't waste your money.

The employees keep disappearing!?! That's not a good sign, and yet the place is packed. Why do they keep getting rid of terrific people?

    Where's Javier?
For 30 years, Javier mixed the much-in-demand house Italian salad dressing. Chris and John, you've got to bring Javier and his salad dressing back! Yes, it's even better than Taix's 80 year-old recipe! Please find Javier!

Claudette and I are very happy with the remodel and revamped menu, although we really miss Octavio! We have visited Gus's a number of times now, and we particularly like the fried chicken, corn bread, cole slaw, potato salad, sliders, and pulled-pork sandwich. The staff is friendly, and Juan, in particular, is a terrific bartender. However, we were sorry to see Damien-the-bartender leave. Next time you visit Gus's, you might want to relax at the bar for a bit, and then ask for table 40 (formerly table 21), and we think you'll have a terrific evening. Enjoy!
